Investment memo: our current view
Quality compounder, priced above our base case. Five Below is a US specialty value retailer for kids and teens (most items USD 1 to 5, some above USD 5 under "Five Beyond"). After a bad fiscal 2024 (comparable sales -2.7%, CEO exit in July 2024, share price from about USD 213 at the end of December 2023 to USD 72.74 at the end of July 2024), the business turned sharply: comparable sales rose 12.8% in fiscal 2025 and 18.3% in the first half of fiscal 2026, led by transactions (+15.9%), not ticket (+2.0%). The fleet reached 2,022 stores on 1 August 2026, and management still targets more than 3,500 US stores. (confirmed, 10-K fiscal 2025 and 10-Q Q2 2026 · captured 31 Oct 14:10)
The headline Q2 2026 numbers need care. GAAP diluted EPS of USD 3.99 includes a USD 163.6M cost-of-goods benefit from refunds of IEEPA tariffs that the Supreme Court struck down in February 2026; adjusted EPS was USD 1.68. The refund is one-off (the company expects remaining refunds to be immaterial) and has drawn two consumer class actions arguing the money belongs to shoppers who paid tariff-inflated prices. (confirmed, 10-Q Q2 2026)
At USD 240.96 (30 October 2026 close) the market cap is about USD 13.27B and the EV, excluding lease liabilities, about USD 12.08B (est.). That is 23.5x consensus fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS of USD 10.25 and 2.1x sales, above Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Ollie's. Our scenario values today are USD 83 bust, USD 202 base, USD 289 boom (9% discount rate, four years). The S&P Global consensus target is USD 305.27 (26 analysts, 14 October 2026, speculated). Morningstar could not be read on the web (HTTP 403) and waits for the IBKR capture. The two-source fair-value average is USD 253.7, 5.3% above the price: green, but thin, and our own number is below the price.
The next hard test is the Q3 fiscal 2026 report, expected in the first week of December 2026 (est.: last year's Q3 came on 3 December 2025; no date announced as of 31 October 2026). Guidance to beat: net sales USD 1.21 to 1.23B, comparable sales +8% to +10%, diluted EPS USD 1.01 to 1.13, about 40 net new stores.

What the business actually sells
A typical store carries more than 4,000 products in "worlds": Candy, Style, Party, Room, Create, Tech, Sports and New & Now. The company buys from about 1,000 vendors, none above 5% of purchases; about 60% of fiscal 2025 purchases came from domestic vendors, but China is the single largest country of manufacture. About 85% of store merchandise moves through five shipcenters (Pedricktown NJ leased; Forsyth GA, Conroe TX, Buckeye AZ and Indianapolis IN owned). E-commerce ships from Indianapolis and is small. Crew: about 7,800 full-time and 16,800 part-time at 31 January 2026. (confirmed, 10-K fiscal 2025 · 31 Oct 14:10)

Leisure rose 37% year on year in Q2 2026 (USD 470M to 644M, est. from confirmed figures) and explains most of the comp. That concentration matters: a hit category (the 10-Q does not name it) can fade.
Where the dollar lands: from a family shopping trip to one store
From the shopper to the shelf · fiscal 2026
One new store, per year · est. from the company model
Five Below is the last layer before the shopper, so the cutaway runs from the US kid and teen shopper to one store and the item on the shelf, and the money ladder measures one new store, the company's reference unit.
| Layer (one new store) | Value | Tag |
|---|---|---|
| Cash investment (build-out net of allowances, inventory net of payables, pre-opening) | about USD 0.4M | confirmed (company model) |
| First full-year sales | about USD 2.0M | confirmed (company model) |
| Average sales per store, fiscal 2026 guide (USD 5.67B midpoint over about 2,000 average stores) | about USD 2.8M | est. |
| Gross profit at fiscal 2025 gross margin 36.0% on USD 2.0M | about USD 0.72M | est. |
| Company operating profit at fiscal 2025 margin 9.6% on USD 2.0M | about USD 0.19M | est. |
| 150 new stores a year x USD 2.0M | about USD 300M, about 6% of fiscal 2025 sales | est. |
| Whitespace to 3,500 stores (about 1,480 more than 2,022) x USD 2.0M | about USD 3.0B, about 0.6 years of fiscal 2025 sales | est. |
One store is about 0.04% of fiscal 2025 sales; the whole whitespace, if the target holds, is worth about 0.6 years of current sales at first-year productivity.

Quality of the Q2 2026 beat (est. from confirmed lines): adjusted operating margin 9.0% against 5.4% a year earlier; adjusted gross margin 35.6% (449.1 over 1,261.5) against 33.4%, helped by a lower shrink accrual rate and occupancy leverage, partly offset by fuel in distribution. Operating cash flow H1 USD 442.7M, capex USD 110.4M; the refund sits in both.
Balance sheet at 1 August 2026 (confirmed): cash USD 561.1M, short-term securities USD 626.8M, inventory USD 941.2M (+17.7% year on year against sales +22.9%), no borrowings, operating lease liabilities USD 2,038.6M. On 14 October 2026 the asset-based revolver was doubled to USD 450M and extended to October 2031 (8-K, confirmed).

No third-party ranking exists for this niche. Addressable market under two anchors: (a) store-whitespace anchor: 3,500 stores x about USD 2.8M = about USD 9.8B of potential sales (est. from the company target), about 2x today; (b) peer-wallet anchor: Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Ollie's together sell about USD 67B (est.), so Five Below equals about 7% of that pooled value-variety wallet. Neither anchor is a published TAM.
Scenarios: fiscal 2030 under bust, base and boom (31 October 2026)
Horizon: fiscal 2030 (year to January 2031). Arithmetic: stores x average sales per store = sales; x operating margin = EBIT; plus about USD 30M interest; tax 24%; over the share count after buybacks. Consensus anchor: fiscal 2026 USD 5.71B and EPS 10.25; fiscal 2027 USD 6.24B and EPS 11.06 (S&P Global via StockAnalysis, 14 Oct 2026, speculated).
| Case | Stores end FY2030 | Sales per average store | Sales | Op. margin | EPS | Versus consensus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bust | about 2,550 (120 a year) | USD 2.6M (comps give back) | USD 6.4B | 8.0% | USD 7.77 (53M shares) | Below: EPS falls from today's run-rate |
| Base | about 2,700 (about 160 a year) | USD 3.05M | USD 8.0B | 10.5% | USD 12.97 (51M shares) | Below the consensus path (about USD 14 to 15 if 8% to 10% growth continues after fiscal 2027, est.) |
| Boom | about 2,800 | USD 3.2M | USD 8.7B | 12.0% | USD 16.32 (50M shares) | Above consensus; needs margins back to pre-2022 levels |
EPS check, base: 8.0B x 10.5% = 840M EBIT; + 30M = 870M pretax; x 0.76 = 661M; / 51M = 12.97. Bust: 6.4B x 8% = 512M; 542M; 412M; / 53M = 7.77. Boom: 8.7B x 12% = 1,044M; 1,074M; 816M; / 50M = 16.32. (all est.)
Single driver of the boom case: traffic-led comps of mid-single digits for four more years on top of 150-plus stores a year. Capacity ceiling: the five-shipcenter network and suitable real estate; the 10-K says new shipcenters are planned. Implied sales CAGR from the fiscal 2026 guide midpoint (USD 5.67B): bust 3.1%, base 9.0%, boom 11.3% (est.).

No equity raise since the 2012 IPO; no options outstanding at 1 August 2026; dilution comes only from RSUs and PRSUs (stock compensation USD 15.0M in H1 2026). Buybacks: 266,997 shares for USD 40.0M in fiscal 2024 (average USD 149.79), none in fiscal 2025, 310,501 shares for USD 60.0M in Q2 2026 (average USD 193.24), and a new USD 600M authorisation on 29 August 2026 (about 4.5% of the market cap, est.). No dividend. (confirmed, 10-Q Q2 2026)
Scenario values per share today
Value today = fiscal 2030 EPS x exit P/E / 1.09^4 (= 1.4116). Net cash is assumed to be spent on buybacks, which the share counts already reflect, so it is not added again.

| Boom | 16.32 | 25x | USD 408.0 | USD 289.0 |
The price (240.96) sits between our base and boom cases; the consensus target (305.27) sits above our boom case. To justify today's price on our base EPS, a buyer needs a 26x exit multiple, or an EPS path about 19% above our base at 22x (est.).

CEO pay fiscal 2025: USD 10.81M, against a median crew member at USD 5,982 (confirmed, DEF 14A). The 2026 PRSU design pays on three-year net sales (60%) and adjusted operating income (40%), so the tariff refund, excluded from adjusted figures, should not lift it if the committee uses its own definitions.
Share price under Park: about USD 105 at the end of December 2024, USD 74.93 at the end of March 2025, USD 240.96 on 30 October 2026 (Yahoo monthly closes, confirmed market data), roughly 2.3x since she started.
Ownership
BlackRock 9.0% (4,955,682 shares, per its Schedule 13G/A of 25 January 2024 as quoted in the proxy, so stale) is the only 5% holder listed; Park held 35,385 shares; each director and officer owns well under 1% (DEF 14A, record date 17 April 2026, confirmed). Management is not a large owner.
Revenue-quality test, adapted for a retailer
Retail has no NRE versus product split; the useful splits are traffic versus ticket and comparable versus new-store sales.
| Period | Comps | Transactions | Average ticket | Tag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiscal 2025 | +12.8% | +7.1% | +5.3% | confirmed · 10-K |
| H1 2026 | +18.3% | +15.9% | +2.0% | confirmed · 10-Q |
| Q2 2026 | +14.1% | +13.6% | +0.4% | confirmed · 10-Q |
Traffic-led growth is the healthy kind. Watch points: (1) leisure rose from 45.8% to 51.1% of Q2 sales, a hit-driven concentration; (2) the Q2 gross margin benefited from a lower shrink accrual rate, an estimate that can reverse; (3) the IEEPA refund (USD 169.5M pre-tax including USD 5.9M interest) is excluded from adjusted numbers but sits in GAAP EPS, cash flow and the class-action risk. Geography: US only. Customer concentration: none.
