# Tesla: a flat car business funding a USD 20B-plus bet on autonomy, priced as if the bet has already paid

Research date: **31 October 2026**. Company: **Tesla, Inc.** Listing: **Nasdaq Global Select, TSLA**. ISIN: **US88160R1014**. CIK 1318605. Reporting currency: **USD** (US GAAP). Latest financial period reviewed: **quarter ended 30 September 2026** (Q3 2026 update letter, 8-K filed 21 October 2026; 10-Q filed 22 October 2026). Material announcements reviewed through **31 October 2026**. Capture window 31 October 2026, 14:55 to 15:40 Europe/Luxembourg.

## Investment memo: our current view

**Quality franchise, expensive on anything but the autonomy option.** Tesla's reported business is large, profitable and roughly flat: trailing twelve months revenue of **USD 103.6B** (est., sum of four quarters to Q3 2026, confirmed inputs), Q3 2026 revenue of **USD 28.0B**, flat year on year, deliveries of **486,532**, down 2%. GAAP operating income fell to **USD 718M** (2.6% margin) from USD 1,624M a year earlier because R&D rose 69% to USD 2.76B as the company pours money into what it now calls Super Intelligence (SI): training compute (Cortex 1 and 2, target 400 MW by year end), Robotaxi, Optimus and a chip fab in Austin. Capex guidance is **over USD 20B for 2026** (10-Q, confirmed), against USD 13.0B spent in the first nine months, and Tesla signed **USD 30B** of new unsecured bank facilities on 29 September 2026. Nine-month free cash flow is only **USD 1.9B** (est.).

The bullish evidence is real but early: active FSD subscriptions of **1.74M** (up from 1.04M a year ago), Robotaxi service with purpose-built Cybercabs in Austin since 3 September 2026, nearly **2M** cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles, FSD (Supervised) approved in nine EU countries, record energy-storage backlog, Semi and Optimus production lines started. None of these yet shows up as a separately disclosed revenue line; Services and other grew to USD 4.6B (+33% YoY) with a record USD 734M gross profit.

At **USD 399.81** (30 October 2026 close, Yahoo) the market capitalisation is about **USD 1.58T** on 3,953M shares outstanding, enterprise value about **USD 1.54T**, roughly **15x trailing sales** and about **490x trailing GAAP earnings** (est.). Our 2030 scenario values discounted to today are **USD 38 bust, USD 212 base, USD 578 boom** (10% discount rate, about four years). The price sits between base and boom: it already needs autonomy and robotics to become a large profit pool. External anchors: Morningstar fair value **USD 475** (raised from 450 after Q3, narrow moat; secondary source, speculated until verified on Morningstar), MarketBeat consensus target **USD 414.51** on 49 analysts (Moderate Buy). Our three-source average fair value is **USD 367.17**, 8.2% below the price (red).

**Next hard tests:** the annual meeting on **3 December 2026** (Musk re-election, say-on-pay), Q4 2026 deliveries in the first days of January 2027, and **Q4 2026 results, expected late January 2027** (date not yet announced; Q4 2025 was reported on 28 January 2026).

## Where the product sits: one Robotaxi fleet and the money that reaches Tesla

Cutaway, outermost to innermost (prices est. unless marked):

1. **US ride-hailing market**: paid trips by human drivers (Uber, Lyft) and driverless fleets (Waymo, Tesla in Austin). Tesla runs unsupervised service in Austin only (confirmed).
2. **Robotaxi network in one city**: Tesla app, orchestration, remote support; Austin hours 6am to midnight (confirmed).
3. **Cybercab vehicle**: two seats, no wheel or pedals, built in Texas, line capacity above 125,000 a year (confirmed); build cost about USD 30k per car (speculated, from earlier company target-price remarks).
4. **FSD software and in-car computer**: trained on Cortex 1 (>105 MW) and Cortex 2 (>120 MW) (confirmed).
5. **The company's part**: Tesla owns every layer, which is both the thesis and the concentration risk.

Money ladder for **one 1,000-car Cybercab fleet**, per year at maturity (est.): capex 1,000 x USD 30k = **USD 30M** once; paid miles 1,000 x 50,000 = 50M a year; at USD 1.50 per mile, gross bookings **USD 75M a year**; less energy, cleaning, insurance, depreciation and remote operations at about USD 0.70 per mile, fleet contribution about **USD 40M a year**. Selling the same 1,000 cars as Model Ys at about USD 42k ASP yields **USD 42M once** at an 18.5% gross margin, about USD 7.8M of gross profit. Closing comparison: to match TTM automotive revenue of about USD 75B (est.) the network would need roughly **1M cars** at these rates; the Austin fleet size is not disclosed.

All confirmed, Q3 2026 update letter (21 Oct 2026), captured 31 Oct 15:05. Q2 2026 GAAP net income includes a USD 1,005M unrealised gain on the SpaceX equity stake (USD 2.0B invested in March 2026, formerly a preferred investment in xAI); Q3 includes a USD 142M loss on it. Digital assets (bitcoin) USD 962M at 30 Sep 2026.

Balance sheet, 30 Sep 2026 (confirmed): cash and investments USD 45,447M; debt and finance leases USD 9,523M (current 1,387M, long-term 8,136M), almost all non-recourse (USD 9,265M, incl. a China working capital facility of USD 5,966M); net cash **USD 35.9B** (est.). New on 29 Sep 2026 (8-K, confirmed): USD 20.0B three-year delayed-draw term loan (Citi as agent), USD 8.0B five-year revolver and USD 2.0B 364-day revolver (Wells Fargo as agent); the 10-Q debt table shows USD 30,000M unused commitments.

TTM (Q4 2025 to Q3 2026, est.): revenue USD 103.6B, GAAP net income USD 3.2B, non-GAAP USD 6.1B, FCF USD 3.3B. Nine-month capex of USD 13.0B against guidance of more than USD 20B implies Q4 capex of USD 7B or more (est.).

## Competitors and market share (31 October 2026)

| Arena | Main rivals | Role | Tesla position | Tag |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Battery EVs, global | BYD, Geely, VW Group, SAIC, Hyundai-Kia | OEMs | ~1.74M deliveries TTM (est. from quarterly figures); BYD sells more BEVs a year (speculated, industry trackers, not re-verified this run) | mixed |
| Robotaxi, US | Waymo (Alphabet), Zoox (Amazon) | captive fleets | Waymo runs in more cities with more paid rides (speculated, press); Tesla uses cameras only and builds its own vehicle | speculated |
| Driver-assistance software | Mobileye, Huawei, Momenta, Nvidia DRIVE | merchant suppliers | FSD sold only on Tesla cars; 1.74M active subscriptions | confirmed (Tesla) |
| Grid storage | Fluence, Sungrow, BYD, CATL-based integrators | merchant | 13.7 GWh in Q3 2026, 50.2 GWh TTM (est.) | confirmed inputs |
| Humanoid robots | Figure, Agility, Unitree, UBTech, Boston Dynamics | startups, Chinese makers | Production line started, no shipments disclosed | confirmed (Tesla) |

TAM under two anchors (speculated): bullish houses size robotaxi at trillions of dollars of annual bookings by the early 2030s; a bottom-up anchor of today's US ride-hail bookings (order of USD 60 to 80B a year, speculated) is far smaller. The boom case needs the first anchor; the base case needs only a slice of the second plus FSD software.

## Scenarios: 2030 under bust, base and boom (31 October 2026)

| Case | 2030 revenue | Net margin | Net income | P/E | Equity value 2030 | Tag |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Bust**: autos flat, autonomy stalls, price war | USD 130B | 6% | USD 7.8B | 25x | 195B + 36B cash = USD 231B | est. |
| **Base**: autos +4% a year, energy USD 25B, FSD + Robotaxi USD 25B | USD 200B | 14% | USD 28B | 45x | 1,260B + 36B = USD 1,296B | est. |
| **Boom**: Robotaxi in dozens of cities, Optimus external sales | USD 350B | 20% | USD 70B | 50x | 3,500B + 36B = USD 3,536B | est. |

Per share today = equity value 2030 / 1.10^4.2 (= 1.49) / 4,100M shares (3,953M plus about 150M of further dilution from awards and plans, est.):
- Bust: 231 / 1.49 / 4.1 = **USD 38**
- Base: 1,296 / 1.49 / 4.1 = **USD 212**
- Boom: 3,536 / 1.49 / 4.1 = **USD 578**

The single driver of the boom case is paid unsupervised miles. Capacity ceilings: battery supply (the letter calls it "the limiting factor"), the Cybercab line at above 125,000 a year, and city-by-city regulation. The base case implies about 14% a year revenue growth from TTM USD 103.6B (est.). 2027 consensus revenue was not captured in this run (IBKR pending).

## Leadership and governance (31 October 2026)

### Who runs it and who owns it

- **CEO Elon Musk**: early investor and chair from 2004, CEO since 2008 (company history, confirmed in prior filings). He also leads SpaceX (now including xAI; Tesla holds under 1% of SpaceX after a USD 2.0B investment in March 2026, 10-Q, confirmed) and X. Time allocation is the recurring governance concern.
- **CFO Vaibhav Taneja** (signs the Q3 10-Q, confirmed). **General Counsel** Brandon Ehrhart (signs 8-Ks, confirmed). **Chair** Robyn Denholm, up for re-election (DEF 14A, per search summary).
- CEO holdings after June 2026: Form 4 lines of 710.2M shares (the 423.7M award shares plus 286.4M net 2018 option shares) and 413.2M in his revocable trust, about **1,123M shares, ~28% of outstanding** (est. from confirmed Form 4 lines). Award shares carry a voting agreement with an irrevocable proxy to the company secretary.

### Promises versus delivery

| Promise (source) | What the latest report showed |
| --- | --- |
| Robotaxi in Austin (2025 letters) | Launched June 2025; Cybercabs in the fleet from 3 Sep 2026 (Q3 2026 letter, confirmed) |
| Cybercab volume production in 2026 (2025 letters) | Line listed at >125,000 capacity, status "Production"; volumes not disclosed |
| Semi volume production (promised repeatedly since 2019) | "Began volume production" in Nevada, Q3 2026 (confirmed) |
| Optimus production line in 2026 | "Production began in Fremont", no unit count (Q3 2026) |
| Unsupervised FSD for customer cars | Not yet; FSD remains "Supervised" in all markets (Q3 2026 footnote) |
| Next Gen Roadster | Unveiled 15 Oct 2026, status "Design development" (confirmed) |

### Revenue quality, adapted for Tesla

- Regulatory credits shrinking: USD 113M in Q3 2026 vs 417M a year earlier (confirmed), a high-margin line disappearing.
- Deferred revenue (largely FSD and service) USD 8.8B (current 4,661M plus long-term 4,126M) vs 7.1B at end 2025 (confirmed inputs), consistent with FSD subscription growth.
- Energy revenue -16% YoY in Q3, partly from "tariff-related customer refunds" (confirmed).
- Non-operating swings are large: SpaceX mark-to-market, bitcoin, FX (Other income ranged from -592M to +590M per quarter).
- The GAAP vs non-GAAP gap is driven by stock-based compensation (USD 1.24B in Q3 2026 per the 10-Q equity statement, confirmed; USD 982M net of tax in the update letter reconciliation).
